Ring-necked Ducks

We spotted this group of about 10 Ring-necked ducks during a walk at Fanshawe park on April 14th. It was just beginning to warm up again after Friday’s ice storm. Evidently these smaller diving ducks breeds in freshwater bogs and marshes in northern boreal forests. According to allaboutbirds.com the spring migration is from early February through March so unless they plan to stay in southern Ontario they’d better get a move on!

  1. allaboutbirds, though a great site, might be giving the migration window based on United States timing. The timing for their migration through southern Ontario would naturally be a bit later on, since we’re further north.
