Back to St. Marys for a quick peek at the river from the trestle. Still not a lot of action on the river but we heard some strange noises as we headed along the path from the flats up to the trestle. Finally we saw the bird that was making all of the fuss. It was a Red-bellied Woodpecker busy collecting bugs in the trees above us. At first it didn’t seem to be very red-bellied but the books describe it as a wash, which was quite accurate. In fact it looked as though someone had used a watercolour brush to make a light wash of an orangy-red colour near the beak and on the belly.
After watching for a bit and wondering why the bird was making so much noise, we realized that the adult was likely talking to its young after it disappeared into a hole in the tree.
